Pigs consistently demonstrate cognitive abilities comparable to or exceeding dogs, yet receive far less welfare protection. The gap between pig intelligence and pig welfare represents one of the starkest inconsistencies in how we treat animals.
The cognitive complexity of pigs makes their routine treatment in intensive farming systems among the most ethically troubling disconnects in animal agriculture. Animals capable of sophisticated social cognition, problem-solving, and emotional complexity are kept in concrete stalls with no enrichment, unable to root, socialize normally, or engage any of their natural behaviors. The welfare case for dramatically improved pig farming standards is extraordinarily strong given what we know about pig cognition.
