Allergic bronchitis, also called canine chronic bronchitis, causes persistent airway inflammation and coughing that significantly diminishes quality of life for affected dogs when poorly managed.
Dogs with poorly controlled allergic bronchitis experience chronic coughing episodes that are distressing and physically exhausting. The sensation of being unable to breathe easily causes anxiety and restricts activity. Dogs may avoid exercise because exertion triggers coughing fits. Environmental exposures including secondhand smoke, scented candles, and air fresheners can trigger paroxysmal coughing that causes dogs visible distress. The condition is manageable with appropriate veterinary care, but owners may underestimate the degree of suffering their dog experiences because dogs cannot verbally communicate respiratory discomfort.
