Constipation and its severe progression to megacolon cause significant pain and distress in cats, with some affected cats requiring surgical intervention when medical management fails.
Constipated cats experience the same discomfort as constipated humans, but often suffer in silence for extended periods before owners recognize the problem. Straining in the litter box is frequently mistaken for urinary issues. Cats with impacted colons are in genuine pain and may stop eating, lose weight, and become lethargic. Megacolon represents chronic, escalating suffering as the colon loses the ability to function. The repeated medical interventions including enemas under anesthesia and ultimately major surgery impose significant additional welfare burdens. Prevention through diet, hydration, and prompt attention to litter box behavior is far preferable.
