Farmed Calf Welfare: Early Life in Dairy Systems

Dairy calves are separated from their mothers within hours of birth, raised in individual hutches, and either destined for the veal industry (males) or future dairy production (females) - with welfare challenges at every stage.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The welfare of dairy calves begins with the trauma of separation. Research documents that cows call for their calves for 24-48+ hours after separation, and calves similarly vocalize and show behavioral distress for days. This is not a minor stress response - it involves sustained activation of stress systems in both animals. Individual calf housing, while reducing disease transmission, prevents the play behavior, social bonding, and learning that calves are developmentally primed for. Calves in individual hutches show abnormal oral behaviors including excessive sucking of pen fixtures, indicators of behavioral frustration from social and nutritional deprivation. Group housing with adequate milk allowances substantially improves welfare without unacceptable disease increases.
