Classroom animals can be powerful welfare education tools or inadvertent demonstrations of poor animal care depending on how they are managed. When properly kept with teacher training, adequate resources, and student responsibility appropriately assigned, classroom animals build empathy and welfare awareness. When kept in inadequate conditions as decoration, they model neglect and normalize poor care. The welfare of classroom animals and the quality of education they provide are inseparable: only well-cared-for animals provide positive welfare education.
