Cat Vestibular Disease: Welfare and Recovery

Feline vestibular syndrome causes sudden, dramatic onset of disorientation and balance problems that, while frightening, is often self-limiting and resolves without treatment.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Acute vestibular disease causes intense, frightening disorientation for affected cats - sudden inability to maintain balance, involuntary eye movements, and rolling represent a profoundly distressing experience. Cats that were walking and interacting normally hours earlier may be unable to stand. The nausea associated with vestibular dysfunction causes additional discomfort and prevents normal eating. The welfare impact is highest in the acute phase, and the good news is that idiopathic vestibular disease typically resolves significantly within 72 hours. Supportive care including anti-nausea medication, assisted feeding, and protection from injury during the acute phase constitutes appropriate welfare-centered management. Cats who do not improve as expected need evaluation for underlying causes requiring specific treatment.
