Farmed Veal Calf Welfare: Housing and Socialization

Veal calf welfare has improved substantially following bans on isolated veal crates, but significant welfare challenges remain in systems that restrict movement and social contact.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Traditional veal production caused some of the most severe welfare compromises documented in animal agriculture - calves confined alone in crates too narrow to turn around, fed exclusively milk to maintain anemia for pale meat color, unable to perform any social or exploratory behavior for their entire lives. Legislative bans on crates represent major welfare progress. However, current group systems, while substantially better, still restrict natural calf behavior including grazing and extended movement. Dietary iron restriction to produce pale veal causes genuine health compromise through anemia. Rose veal production that allows calves outdoor access, iron-sufficient diets, and social housing represents the highest welfare standard currently available in commercial veal systems.
