Aquaponics integrates fish and plant production in recirculating systems. The fish welfare dimensions of aquaponic production deserve attention as the sector expands into urban farming and food sovereignty contexts.
Aquaponics fish welfare depends critically on management quality and stocking density decisions. While the recirculating system design can produce excellent water quality, it also enables very high stocking densities that compromise fish welfare through crowding stress and aggression. The sustainability framing around aquaponics does not automatically translate to high fish welfare. Applying evidence-based fish welfare standards produces systems that are genuinely welfare-positive.
