Bacterial skin infections (pyoderma) are extremely common in dogs, causing persistent discomfort that is often underestimated in severity relative to its impact on quality of life.
Bacterial skin infections cause persistent local pain, pruritus, and discomfort that substantially reduce quality of life. Dogs with deep pyoderma involving folliculitis and furunculosis experience genuine pain from tissue destruction and inflammation. The constant itching and discomfort associated with superficial pyoderma drives excessive scratching and self-trauma. Chronic recurrent pyoderma - common when underlying causes like allergies are not addressed - means dogs cycle through periods of discomfort despite repeated treatment. Antibiotic resistance is an emerging welfare concern because resistant infections are harder to treat and persist longer. Comprehensive management that treats both the infection and its underlying cause provides the best long-term welfare outcome for affected dogs.
