IMHA is a life-threatening autoimmune condition where the immune system destroys red blood cells, causing severe anemia requiring emergency treatment and intensive management.
IMHA causes profound acute suffering through severe anemia - the equivalent of rapidly losing a significant portion of blood volume internally as the immune system destroys red blood cells. Affected dogs experience extreme weakness, breathlessness, and cardiovascular compromise. The distress of severe anemia combined with the stress of emergency hospitalization and invasive treatment creates significant welfare impact. Blood transfusions provide temporary relief but the underlying immune destruction continues until immunosuppression is effective. The high mortality rate means many dogs do not survive despite intensive treatment. Survivors face prolonged recovery on high-dose corticosteroids with their associated side effects, and the risk of relapse requires ongoing monitoring that creates chronic management burden.
