Leptospirosis-associated interstitial nephritis and other causes of acute kidney injury in dogs cause significant welfare impacts and require prompt, intensive management.
Leptospirosis-associated kidney injury causes significant acute suffering through the combination of systemic infection, organ failure, and the discomfort of intensive treatment. Dogs with acute kidney injury experience nausea, lethargy, and the distress of repeated vomiting. The need for IV catheter placement and continuous fluid therapy during hospitalization causes procedural stress. Oliguric renal failure requiring peritoneal dialysis carries both welfare costs and uncertain prognosis. Survivors may have permanent kidney damage requiring long-term management. The preventability of leptospirosis through vaccination makes the suffering of affected dogs particularly unfortunate. Vaccination is recommended particularly for dogs with outdoor access, water exposure, or wildlife contact in endemic areas.
