Tick-borne encephalitis is an emerging neurological threat to dogs in Europe and parts of Asia with severe welfare consequences.
Dogs developing TBE neurological disease experience acute suffering including disorientation, seizures, pain from meningitis, and progressive neurological dysfunction. Severely affected dogs may require intensive care and euthanasia when neurological deficits are irreversible. Prevention through vaccination in endemic areas and tick control represents the most effective welfare intervention. Increased tick distribution due to climate change is expanding TBE risk zones, making awareness important for dog owners in previously low-risk regions. Prompt tick removal reduces but does not eliminate transmission risk.
