Free-range and pasture egg production systems offer welfare benefits but require active management to ensure hens actually access and benefit from outdoor spaces.
Free-range certification does not guarantee that individual hens actually access outdoor space or benefit from it. Ranging behavior requires hens to feel safe from aerial predators, which means bare outdoor ranges without overhead cover are used infrequently. Environmental design including trees, shrubs, and shelter structures substantially increases range utilization across the flock. Poor internal house conditions from overcrowding create welfare deficits that offset outdoor access benefits. Meaningful free-range welfare requires integration of good indoor conditions, accessible pop holes distributed throughout the house, and attractive, sheltered outdoor environments that genuinely invite use.
