Ducks are semi-aquatic birds whose welfare fundamentally depends on water access that most commercial production systems deny them.
Water deprivation for ducks represents a fundamental behavioral welfare failure because water engagement is central to their biological identity and behavioral needs. Ducks denied bathing water cannot maintain feather waterproofing and insulation, clean their eyes and nostrils, or engage in coordinated aquatic foraging behaviors that are intrinsically motivated. Research consistently shows that given the opportunity, ducks preferentially use open water over drinkers for extended periods. Foie gras production through force-feeding causes additional acute welfare harm from esophageal distension, respiratory compromise, and stress of repeated forced handling.
