Dog Panosteitis: Growing Pains and Welfare

Panosteitis causes acute intermittent lameness in growing large breed dogs and is often misdiagnosed, leaving affected dogs untreated and in pain.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Dogs with panosteitis experience recurrent acute bone pain that causes severe lameness during episodes lasting days to weeks. The intermittent, shifting nature of signs can lead owners and veterinarians to doubt the dog's pain or attribute lameness to behavioral factors rather than genuine disease. Untreated dogs suffer through painful episodes without adequate analgesia. The self-resolving nature of panosteitis does not justify withholding pain management during acute episodes - the duration of suffering over a year or more of repeated episodes is substantial. NSAIDs and rest during flares provide meaningful welfare improvement while dogs grow through the affected period.
