Billions of cattle in smallholder farming systems in the developing world face welfare challenges distinct from intensive production including drought, disease, and limited veterinary access.
Cattle in resource-limited smallholder systems face welfare challenges including inadequate feed during drought seasons, high disease burden from preventable infections, and injury from draft work without proper harness fit and rest. The welfare of these animals is also intricately linked with the welfare of the human families who depend on them for food security and livelihoods. Improving smallholder cattle welfare through community veterinary access, drought-resilient feeding strategies, and appropriate working animal management simultaneously improves both animal and human welfare outcomes. The welfare needs of working cattle are often overlooked in comparison to production animals despite their significant contribution to agricultural labor and food systems.
