Canine parvovirus causes severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis with high mortality in unvaccinated dogs, and treatment requires intensive hospitalization that itself creates welfare challenges.
Parvo-affected dogs suffer intensely: profuse bloody diarrhea, violent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, and rapidly developing septic shock. Hospitalization requires IV fluid therapy, antiemetics, and nutritional support for 5-7 days. The combination of physical illness and hospitalization stress creates a significant welfare burden. For dogs that survive, recovery is complete with no long-term consequences. Prevention through timely vaccination is the overwhelming welfare priority - one vaccine series prevents a week of extreme suffering.
