Chronic kidney disease affects 30-40% of cats over 10 years and requires careful management to maintain quality of life as renal function declines.
Cats with CKD experience the welfare consequences of chronic renal insufficiency: reduced appetite from uremia, increased thirst, and eventually nausea and weakness as disease progresses. Well-managed CKD cats can maintain excellent quality of life for years. The key welfare interventions are early detection through annual bloodwork in cats over 7, appropriate dietary transition, subcutaneous fluid support, and management of concurrent hypertension and anemia. Owner willingness to perform home fluid therapy is a major factor in CKD welfare outcomes.
