Puppies born and raised during COVID-19 lockdowns missed critical socialization experiences, resulting in elevated anxiety and reactivity that affects welfare throughout their lives.
The pandemic puppy welfare legacy is a generation of dogs with anxiety disorders that reduce quality of life and strain human-animal bonds. Dogs with under-socialized fear responses experience distress in ordinary situations - strangers, other dogs, traffic - that well-socialized dogs navigate without difficulty. The welfare burden is both acute (each fear episode is genuinely distressing) and chronic (these dogs live in a world that regularly frightens them). Behavioral treatment achieves meaningful improvement but rarely complete resolution of established fear responses.
