The emerging field of wild animal welfare research is developing tools, ethics, and interventions to address the vast scale of suffering in natural ecosystems.
Wild animal welfare is at an inflection point. For most of history, wildlife conservation focused on species and ecosystems with little attention to individual animal welfare. The emerging field is developing methods to measure individual welfare in wild populations, ethical frameworks for evaluating intervention, and specific interventions with favorable welfare-to-ecological-risk ratios. This is genuinely important work - the scale of potential suffering in wild animal populations dwarfs any other animal welfare cause area, and thoughtful research can identify high-value interventions that reduce suffering without disrupting ecosystem function.
