The backyard chicken movement has grown substantially, but welfare standards for small flocks often fall short of commercial requirements despite the pastoral image.
Backyard chickens are frequently kept under the assumption that any free-range life is inherently high-welfare, but welfare problems are common in small flocks. Inadequate predator protection leads to traumatic deaths; poor nutrition from free-ranging without supplement causes egg quality decline and nutritional deficiency; and social groups too small for normal flock dynamics create stress. The welfare of spent hens - those past peak laying - represents a particular concern as they are expensive to feed and difficult to home, leading to neglect or slaughter by unprepared keepers.
