Canine Storm Phobia: Welfare and Evidence-Based Management

Storm phobia is one of the most common and welfare-impairing anxiety disorders in dogs, affecting millions of animals with panic responses to thunder, lightning, static electricity, and barometric pressure changes.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Storm phobia causes significant acute suffering in affected dogs - the panic responses, attempts to escape, and prolonged duration of storms mean animals may experience severe distress for hours at a time, repeatedly throughout storm seasons. Owners who fail to recognize the severity often inadvertently worsen phobia by providing reassurance during phobic episodes or by using punishment for phobic behavior. Welfare-centered management requires early intervention with behavioral modification, environmental management (safe den spaces, anti-static measures), and appropriate medication. Sedation protocols that blunt fear without impairing consciousness are preferred over agents causing immobility without anxiolysis.
