Chelonian Conservation and Welfare: Tortoises and Turtles

Tortoises and turtles face some of the gravest threats of any vertebrate group. Understanding their welfare needs is essential for both wild conservation and responsible captive care.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Captive chelonians often suffer from improper husbandry, particularly inadequate temperature gradients, UVB lighting, and diet. Metabolic bone disease from calcium and vitamin D deficiencies causes painful shell and skeletal deformities. Wild-caught tortoises experience significant stress during capture and transport, with high mortality rates. Sea turtles entangled in fishing gear experience drowning, injury, and stress. Habitat loss forces tortoises into increasingly fragmented areas with insufficient food resources. Both wild and captive chelonians are sensitive to environmental conditions that, when inadequate, cause prolonged suffering.
