Despite growing interest in aquaculture welfare certification, significant gaps remain in what current standards assess and verify. Understanding these gaps helps consumers make more informed choices.
Aquaculture certification gaps mean that even consumers choosing certified products cannot be confident that all welfare-relevant aspects of production have been addressed. A salmon bearing a sustainability certification may have been produced with excellent environmental practices but inhumane slaughter methods, inadequate stocking density monitoring, or broodstock management involving unanaesthetized gamete stripping. The consumer who relies solely on certification label makes a reasonable but imperfect choice. The honest communication is that current certification significantly reduces some welfare risks but does not guarantee comprehensive welfare across all production stages. Improvement requires both more rigorous standards and honest communication about current limitations.
