Shrimp Welfare Certification: Emerging Standards

With billions of shrimp farmed annually and sentience evidence growing, welfare certification frameworks are beginning to address this overlooked sector of animal production.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Shrimp welfare represents a gap between scale and standards that is ethically urgent. The combination of massive production numbers, growing evidence of sentience, and near-total absence of welfare standards creates conditions where enormous aggregate suffering may be occurring without acknowledgment. Eyestalk ablation in particular represents a painful procedure inflicted on millions of breeding females that, if performed on any recognized sentient species, would require anesthesia and veterinary oversight. Consumer and regulatory attention to shrimp welfare has been slow partly because the animals are small, aquatic, and phylogenetically distant from the mammals that typically drive welfare concern.
