Feline lower urinary tract disease is strongly linked to stress in indoor cats. Addressing environmental and dietary risk factors prevents many cases of this painful condition.
FLUTD prevention welfare addresses both the disease itself (which causes significant pain and distress) and the underlying stress state that triggers it. A cat experiencing idiopathic FLUTD is suffering from both the urinary symptoms (dysuria, hematuria, inappropriate elimination) and the accumulated environmental stress that triggered the episode. Treating the episode with analgesics and urinary management while leaving the stress environment unchanged sets the stage for recurrence. True welfare improvement requires addressing the stress causes - inter-cat tension, resource inadequacy, environmental impoverishment - that create the chronic stress state making individual cats vulnerable to FLUTD.
