Farmed shrimp are produced in vast numbers with almost no welfare consideration. Evidence of crustacean sentience is increasing the ethical urgency of addressing shrimp farming and processing practices.
Shrimp welfare is simultaneously one of the most numerically significant and most neglected areas of animal welfare. The scale is almost incomprehensible - trillions of individual animals raised and killed annually with essentially no welfare standard, in systems that routinely involve painful procedures, high-density crowding, and death by methods that cause prolonged suffering in animals we now have substantial evidence can suffer. As the scientific evidence for crustacean sentience strengthens and legal recognition expands, the moral urgency of addressing shrimp welfare in aquaculture grows accordingly.
