Captive Reptile UV-B Lighting and Welfare

Many reptile species require UV-B light to synthesize vitamin D3 and metabolize calcium. Inadequate UV-B causes metabolic bone disease - a painful and preventable welfare problem in captive reptiles.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

UV-B welfare failure in captive reptiles is tragically common because it is invisible - UV light produces no visible glow that owners can see. Reptiles kept without adequate UV-B gradually develop metabolic bone disease: soft, pliable bones that fracture easily, calcium-deficient muscles that spasm, and a progressive deterioration that is painful and life-limiting. By the time the condition is visible, significant damage has occurred. The welfare solution is straightforward: species-appropriate UV-B provision, correct lamp positioning, regular replacement before output degrades, and periodic vet checks including calcium blood levels for at-risk species.
