Electrofishing is widely used in fisheries surveys but the welfare implications for fish are incompletely understood and often overlooked.
Fish welfare during electrofishing has received little regulatory attention despite evidence of spinal injury and physiological stress. The precautionary principle suggests minimizing exposure duration and current intensity. For routine monitoring, passive alternatives should be evaluated for their capacity to replace or reduce electrofishing where welfare-equivalent data quality is achievable.
