Farm Animal Welfare

Livestock Pain Recognition and Treatment Principles

Effective pain management in livestock requires recognition of pain indicators and willingness to treat. Improving pain recognition and reducing barriers to treatment are central welfare challenges in farm animal medicine.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pain management in farm animals is a welfare priority that has lagged behind companion animal medicine despite the same scientific evidence of pain capacity and the same availability of effective treatments. The barriers are partly economic, partly educational, and partly cultural - a belief that farm animals tolerate pain better or that treating pain is an unnecessary expense. All of these barriers have been challenged by evidence: economic studies show that pain treatment around procedures improves production outcomes, educational interventions change treatment behavior, and the cultural attitude has shifted significantly in the past two decades. The remaining gap between knowledge and practice requires continued professional and regulatory pressure.
