Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) is primarily stress-driven in cats. Environmental modification and stress reduction dramatically reduce episodes and improve welfare.
FIC causes significant acute suffering including painful urination, blood in urine, and urinary obstruction in males that is life-threatening. The chronic recurrent nature means many cats experience multiple episodes of genuine pain annually. The stress-driven nature reflects that many cats live in environments that chronically exceed their stress tolerance through resource competition, social conflict, or environmental instability. Addressing the underlying stress causes requires understanding individual cat needs and honestly assessing whether the current environment meets them. Environmental modification can transform the welfare of chronically affected cats.
