Adequate water is fundamental to pig welfare. Understanding water requirements and common provision failures helps prevent welfare problems from this often overlooked area.
Water restriction is a serious welfare problem that causes rapid physiological and behavioral deterioration. Pigs denied adequate water become aggressive, develop salt poisoning, and suffer the extreme discomfort of dehydration. The consequences of water restriction can be life-threatening within 24-48 hours in severe cases. Common farm failures including frozen drinkers in winter, inadequate flow rates, incorrect drinker height, and insufficient drinker numbers can all restrict effective water access for individual animals even when the system appears functional. Regular checking of actual water delivery is a welfare imperative.
