Urethral obstruction is a life-threatening emergency unique to male cats. Rapid recognition and response is critical for welfare and survival of affected cats.
Urethral obstruction causes rapidly escalating welfare harm from intense abdominal pain, inability to urinate, and progressive uremic poisoning. Cats with early obstruction show obvious distress from straining - a behavior often misinterpreted as constipation by owners. As the obstruction persists, systemic toxicity causes collapse, cardiac arrhythmias, and death within hours to days. The speed and severity of welfare deterioration makes owner recognition and emergency response the critical factor in survival. Any male cat showing repeated litter box straining without producing urine is a same-day veterinary emergency without exception.
