Heat stroke is rapidly fatal in dogs if not recognized and treated immediately. Understanding prevention and emergency response can save lives during hot weather.
Heat stroke causes rapidly escalating suffering from hyperthermia, organ failure, and neurological damage. Dogs experiencing heat stroke show extreme distress - excessive panting, drooling, weakness, and collapse as their temperature rises. Brain damage from hyperthermia causes seizures and unconsciousness. Even with aggressive emergency treatment, heat stroke carries significant mortality and survivors may have permanent organ damage. The entirely preventable nature of most heat stroke cases makes it a particularly significant welfare failure. Never leaving a dog in a parked car and limiting exercise in hot weather prevents the vast majority of cases.
