Modern broiler chickens have been selectively bred to grow so rapidly that their bodies cannot keep pace, causing widespread chronic pain, locomotion disorders, and organ failure.
Fast-growing broiler chickens experience chronic pain from musculoskeletal problems that make walking difficult and lying on litter painful. Their cardiovascular systems are strained beyond capacity, causing heart attacks and ascites. The suffering is invisible within large flocks of tens of thousands of birds in dimly lit sheds. The scale of suffering is enormous: over 70 billion broiler chickens are produced annually worldwide, the vast majority experiencing some degree of welfare compromise from their extreme growth genetics.
