Feral Cat Population Management and Welfare

Feral cat population management raises complex welfare questions as different approaches have very different implications for both cat welfare and wildlife populations.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Feral cats live difficult lives characterized by chronic stress, disease, injury, and high mortality from vehicles, predators, and exposure. Their welfare is substantially worse than well-managed indoor cats. Population management approaches have different welfare implications: TNR prevents suffering of unborn kittens while allowing existing cats to live out their lives; lethal control causes death but may reduce overall suffering if populations are successfully reduced; doing nothing allows populations to grow with associated suffering. The best approach varies by context and goals.
