Epilepsy affects approximately 1-2% of dogs, causing seizures that are distressing to witness and experience, but can be managed effectively with appropriate treatment.
Dogs experiencing seizures lose consciousness and control of their bodies, which is believed to involve loss of awareness during the event itself. The post-ictal period of disorientation, anxiety, and exhaustion may cause more distress than the seizure itself, sometimes lasting hours. Poorly controlled epilepsy causes frequent seizures that interrupt normal life and cause cumulative brain damage. With appropriate treatment, many epileptic dogs live full and happy lives with seizures well-controlled.
