Zoo animal welfare varies enormously between facilities, and evidence-based welfare assessment tools are helping drive improvements in standards across the industry.
Welfare conditions in zoos range from excellent, with enriched naturalistic environments and expert veterinary care, to very poor, with barren enclosures, inappropriate social groupings, and limited behavioral opportunities. The gap between the best and worst facilities is enormous. Animals in poor facilities experience chronic stress, boredom, and physical health problems that their visible abnormal behaviors signal. Consumer choices about which facilities to support, and advocacy for higher standards, can drive improvement.
