Coral Reef Ecosystem Welfare and Marine Animals

Coral reefs support the highest marine biodiversity, and their decline from climate change and human pressures causes welfare harms for billions of marine animals that depend on them.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The degradation and death of coral reefs displaces and kills the billions of fish, invertebrates, and other animals that depend on reef structure for shelter, food, and reproduction. Fish forced from declining reefs face increased predation risk, reduced food availability, and reproductive failure. The loss of structural complexity removes refuges that prey species depend on for survival. While reef ecosystem welfare is harder to assess than individual animal welfare, the scale of suffering from reef decline is enormous.
