Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive neurological disease affecting older dogs that causes gradual paralysis, requiring compassionate management and quality of life assessment.
Dogs with degenerative myelopathy face a progressive loss of mobility and eventually bodily function, but importantly the disease is not painful during most of its course. Dogs may maintain excellent quality of life for extended periods with appropriate support including wheelchairs, physical therapy, and nursing care for bodily functions. The welfare challenge is maintaining dignity and quality of life as paralysis progresses, and recognizing when loss of continence and inability to position change for comfort signals that quality of life has declined below acceptable thresholds.
