Dog Kennel Cough: Management and Welfare

Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection causing significant discomfort in dogs, common wherever dogs gather in groups.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Kennel cough causes welfare concerns primarily through the distressing cough that can be severe and persistent. The harsh, deep cough is uncomfortable and can be alarming for dogs, disrupting sleep and normal activities. While most cases are self-limiting, the 2-3 week duration of coughing represents a sustained welfare cost even for mild cases. In immunocompromised or very young dogs, progression to pneumonia causes significantly worse welfare outcomes with fever, lethargy, and breathing difficulty. The welfare of dogs in commercial boarding and daycare settings is affected by the frequency of kennel cough exposure - facilities with good hygiene, adequate ventilation, and vaccination requirements reduce exposure risk for all dogs using their services. Dogs with active kennel cough should not attend group activities to prevent spreading the infection.
