Creating genuinely positive welfare states for pigs requires more than eliminating suffering - it requires enabling joy, play, and the full expression of their capabilities.
Positive pig welfare goes beyond the absence of pain, fear, and deprivation to encompass the presence of joy, curiosity, play, and the satisfaction of natural motivations. Pigs given the opportunity to explore, root, play socially, and engage cognitively show behavioral indicators of positive emotional states - optimistic judgment patterns, anticipatory excitement, playful running and wrestling. These positive states are not luxuries or anthropomorphic projections but measurable aspects of welfare that matter morally alongside the absence of negative experiences. Creating conditions for positive pig welfare requires not just reducing harm but actively designing environments and management that enable pigs to flourish. This is a higher bar than most commercial systems currently meet, but the research demonstrating what positive pig welfare looks like provides a clear target.
