Goats are the world's most numerous domestic ruminant, providing livelihoods for hundreds of millions of smallholder farmers while facing significant welfare challenges.
Smallholder goat welfare represents one of the largest and most intractable animal welfare challenges globally. One billion goats provide essential protein, income, and social capital for hundreds of millions of families in low-income countries, but welfare standards are constrained by the resources and knowledge available. Nutritional deficiencies are extremely common because traditional grazing management often fails to provide adequate minerals and protein for productive animals. Disease management is limited by veterinary access - in many regions, the nearest qualified vet may be hours away and unaffordable. Housing ranges from adequate to severely insufficient against weather extremes. Addressing smallholder goat welfare requires approaches that are practical within resource constraints: community animal health worker programs, simple oral rehydration and first aid training, mineral block provision, and basic housing improvement support provide meaningful welfare gains at feasible cost.
