Cattle Body Condition Scoring as a Welfare Tool

Body condition scoring is one of the simplest and most powerful welfare assessment tools available to cattle farmers, providing objective nutritional status information.

Welfare Considerations

Body condition monitoring provides an objective window into an animal's nutritional welfare that visual assessment alone cannot reliably provide. Animals can appear healthy while losing critical body reserves, and by the time welfare problems become visually obvious, intervention may be weeks late. Dairy cows that enter the dry period over-conditioned and then mobilize excessive body fat in early lactation suffer from fatty liver, ketosis, and dramatically increased disease risk - all welfare harms that appropriate BCS management at drying off could prevent. Beef cows that are thin at calving produce less colostrum, and their calves have higher mortality - another welfare cascade from a preventable nutritional problem. BCS is one of the most powerful tools in the farmer's welfare toolbox.
