Interdigital cysts (furuncles) are painful paw conditions in dogs causing lameness and discomfort, requiring targeted treatment and attention to underlying causes.
Interdigital cysts cause genuine paw pain - affected dogs lick their paws continuously, show lameness on affected feet, and are reluctant to exercise normally. The condition is often chronic and recurrent because treatment addresses the infection without the underlying driver (allergy, Demodex, trauma from surface type). Dogs with allergic skin disease are particularly prone to recurrent interdigital furuncles because skin barrier dysfunction and chronic inflammation create the conditions for hair follicle disruption. Addressing the allergy with appropriate medical management while treating each acute episode reduces recurrence rates substantially. Epsom salt soaks provide some palliative relief and can help draw infection in acute cases.
