Dust bathing is a fundamental behavioral need of chickens that is frustrated in most commercial housing systems, causing significant welfare compromise.
The absence of dust bathing opportunity is one of the clearest welfare harms in conventional poultry production. Dust bathing motivation in chickens is innate and virtually impossible to suppress - deprived birds will perform vacuum dust bathing on wire floors, going through the complete behavioral sequence without any substrate. This behavior persists even when the bird cannot achieve the actual function of the behavior, representing a state of chronic behavioral frustration. Welfare assessments of chicken systems consistently identify dust bathing as a high-priority behavioral need. Providing appropriate substrate requires either loose-litter systems or specific dust bathing areas sufficient for the entire flock - minimum provisions in many existing cage-free systems do not meet this requirement.
