Cat Skin Disease: Miliary Dermatitis and Eosinophilic Lesions

Feline skin disease patterns including miliary dermatitis and eosinophilic granuloma complex cause significant welfare harm and reflect underlying allergic conditions.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Feline skin disease reaction patterns cause significant welfare harm through intense itching, self-trauma from scratching and over-grooming, and the pain of eosinophilic plaques and granulomas. The indolent ulcer on the upper lip - a common eosinophilic lesion - is painful and disfiguring. The welfare cost is compounded when the underlying trigger is not identified and cats receive repeated corticosteroid courses that provide temporary relief while the cause continues. Identifying and eliminating the primary trigger - most commonly fleas, followed by food allergy and environmental allergens - provides sustained relief rather than cycles of treatment and relapse.
