Horse Colic Pain Assessment and Triage

Accurate colic pain assessment is essential for appropriate triage and treatment decisions that protect horse welfare through one of the most common equine emergencies.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Colic pain assessment welfare significance lies in the decision it drives: whether to administer analgesia, when to call a veterinarian, and when to refer for surgery. Horses in severe colic pain experience some of the most intense welfare compromise possible - the visceral pain of intestinal obstruction, volvulus, or ischemia is extreme. Withholding analgesia pending veterinary assessment in a horse showing violent pain is itself a welfare harm. Appropriate early analgesia reduces suffering and does not significantly impair surgical triage when clinical assessment includes heart rate, gut sounds, mucous membrane color, and rectal examination. Owner education about colic pain assessment enables more appropriate veterinary communication and faster progression to appropriate care level.
