Routine rabbit ear care prevents the development of mite infestations and ear infections, but improper cleaning can cause welfare harm.
Rabbit ear care requires understanding the difference between normal and pathological: attempts to clean normal rabbit ear canals are at best unnecessary and at worst cause damage. However, recognizing pathological ear conditions early requires regular inspection. Lop breeds with bent ear canals are genuinely predisposed to wax accumulation that can predispose to infection and require monitoring. Ear mites - the most common rabbit ear problem - cause intense discomfort requiring prompt veterinary treatment. Attempting to remove ear mite crusts at home before treatment is painful and can cause bleeding and infection - the crusts should be left until after treatment allows them to be gently removed as they loosen.
