Rooting occupies 40% of pig active time in natural environments, and providing rooting opportunities is central to good pig welfare.
Rooting deprivation is directly connected to tail biting - one of the most prevalent welfare problems in pig production. Pigs that cannot perform rooting on appropriate substrates redirect the exploratory behavior at pen mates' tails, ears, and flanks, causing injury and suffering. Tail docking reduces consequences without addressing the root cause. The behavioral need is so fundamental that even pigs with adequate food will show persistent frustrated rooting attempts on hard surfaces. Outdoor access on soil provides authentic satisfaction; indoor pigs require deep straw or compost-like substrates.
